History of International Women’s Day

Susan B. Anthony was a political activist and an advocate of women’s rights. After the Civil War, she fought for the 14th Amendment that was meant to grant all naturalized and native-born Americans citizenship in the hope that it would include suffrage rights. Although the 14th Amendment was ratified in 1868, it still didn’t secure their vote. In 1869, the National Woman Suffrage Association (NWSA) was founded by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony to continue the fight for women’s rights.

In the early 1900s, women were experiencing pay inequality, a lack of voting rights, and they were being overworked. In response to all of this, 15,000 women marched through New York City in 1908 to demand their rights. In 1909, the first National Women’s Day was observed in accordance with a declaration by the Socialist Party of America. This was celebrated on the last Sunday of February until 1913.

An International Women’s Conference was organized in August 1910 by Clara Zetkin, a German suffragist and leader in the Women’s Office. Zetkin proposed a special Women’s Day to be organized annually and International Women’s Day was honored the following year in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland, with more than one million attending the rallies. On August 18, 1920, the 19th Amendment was ratified and white women were granted the right to vote in the U.S.

Advocate for gender equality in your workplace

In 2021, women are facing new challenges at work as a result of the COVID-19 crisis. According to the McKinsey report, , women in the United States – especially women of colour – are more likely to have been laid off or furloughed, or driven to consider leaving their careers due to the increased responsibility of managing household and childcare responsibilities.  

To ensure that women continue to progress toward gender equality at work, it’s essential that businesses create inclusive working environments. This International Women’s Day, examine your company’s policies and/or challenge your business leaders to ensure that women receive fair and equitable support at work. History of Women’s Day

 It may come as a rather sad surprise that Women’s Day was first celebrated on February 28th, 1909 in New York. Two years later, German socialist Luise Zietz proposed that the holiday become an annually observed one that would celebrate various women’s issues, such as suffrage, so as to promote equal rights for women. The first few Women’s Days were celebrated in a quite different fashion than they are nowadays, with hundreds of demonstrations taking place in Europe. During these demonstrations, women demanded they finally be given both the right to vote and to hold public office.

Employment sex discrimination was also an important issue. In 1917, the Women’s Day demonstrations in Saint Petersburg, Russia, helped initiate the February Revolution, when women marched through the city demanding an end to World War I. This shocked even Leon Trotsky, who, much like other Russian leaders of the day, did not expect the Women’s Day protests to cause that much of a stir. Until 1977, Women’s Day was celebrated mainly in socialist countries. It was only after the United Nations General Assembly’s decision to proclaim March 8th International Women’s Day that the holiday gained worldwide popularity.

Every year on March 8th, International Women’s Day is celebrated by millions of women throughout the world. This is a solidarity day of all women who struggled for equality of rights and emancipation. The holiday is an opportunity to remember the struggles of women throughout history as well as the achievements they have made. During the 8th of March different events are held (such as concerts and demonstrations). The events cover women’s achievements as well as the problems that women face.

International Women’s Day originated at an international congress in 1910 in Copenhagen, Denmark. This congress was attended by women from 17 different countries. At that congress, a woman from Germany named Clara Zetkin suggested setting a special date to celebrate each year as an international women’s day. That day women would have an opportunity to hold special events and demonstrations in order to attract public’s attention to their problems.

Тогда женщины могли бы устраивать специальные мероприятия и демонстрации, чтобы привлечь внимание общественности к своим проблемам.

It was proposed to set the date on the 8th of March because it was an anniversary of the famous protest of textile and garment workers in 1857 in New York City. Women lived in crowded tenement houses and worked for 16 hours a day. They protested against the terrible working conditions and required a wage raise. This story pushed many women to begin to struggle for their political rights, the right to vote and improvement of working conditions. March 8th has become a truly international holiday in 1977. That year the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution inviting every country to set the 8th of March as a United Nations Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace. Nowadays the International Women’s Day is celebrated all over the world but not only on the 8th of March. Also, the content of the celebration varies a lot. In many countries, for example in Russia, this holiday is celebrated as much as Mother’s Day (which is celebrated in May in Europe and the USA). Women receive flowers, gifts and cards from their families. Thanks to this holiday a great deal has already been accomplished to help women in the world. But we still have a lot of work to do. Now congratulate your mothers, grandmothers, wives and sisters with that day and give them all your best wishes and love!
