Release
In the summer of 2012, Twenty One Pilots released the Three Songs EP, which featured the tracks «Guns for Hands», «Migraine», and «Ode to Sleep». On September 11, «Holding on to You» was released as a single. On December 18, the album was made available for streaming via Entertainment Weekly. Vessel was released through Fueled by Ramen on January 8, 2013. The two elderly men pictured on the album cover are Joseph and Dun’s grandfathers. The pair did it to see what the label’s reaction was and when the label said yes the group said «Okay, maybe this is going to work!» In an interview, Joseph spoke on the meaning behind the album’s name, saying that a vessel (our body) is an object carrying something far more important than the outer shell, and when we die, that is set free and lives on.
To help support the album, the band toured internationally throughout the year. «House of Gold» was released as a radio single on August 6, 2013. On September 15, «Fake You Out» was released as a single. On October 4, the music video for «House of Gold» was released. The video was directed by Warren Kommers and filmed on Will Smith’s ranch outside of Los Angeles, California. «Car Radio» was released as a radio single on March 18, 2014.
The album is available on CD, digital download, a limited edition Clear Vinyl, and a limited edition white cassette. All physical copies are available through the Official Twenty One Pilots Store (store.twentyonepilots.com). Hot Topic released an exclusive red vinyl, which is no longer being sold by TOP or Hot Topic, and is worth around $80 — $200 on eBay, depending on physical condition.

2014
In January 2014, Twenty One Pilots joined label mates Paramore on tour in Australia and New Zealand marking the band’s first appearance in Oceania. In February the band resumed the Trip for Concerts series with the Winter 2014 leg that ran through Europe. In April, the Spring 2014 leg began and ended on May 18. On April 13, the band appeared in the MTV Movie Awards followed two weeks later on April 28 at Late Night with Seth Meyers. The band played more festivals in June and July and returned to Australia and Asia in August. On September 4 at the LC Pavilion, Twenty One Pilots embarked on their first major headlining world tour, The Quiet is Violent World Tour which ran to the end of November and went through the US, Mexico and Europe. On November 21, the band made their last appearance of the year and took a break to write their fourth studio album Blurryface.

Timeline
On April 21, 2018, Reddit user jakedello, found a URL hidden in a GIF on the Vessel page of the Twenty One Pilots store. The URL, dmaorg.info resulted in a page which read:

The still frame from the GIF on the webstore also revealed more of a URL. /found was discovered after dmaorg.info, and /clancy.html was found by combining multiple frames. In between /found and /clancy were a block of 9 dots, with the lower rightmost dot being separated from the rest by an underscore. These dots relate to the songs on the cover of Blurryface, and their track numbers, , , , , , , , , and . These numbers are identical to the violation code found at dmaorg.info. Substituting this code into the URL produced dmaorg.info/found/15398642_14/clancy.html.
At this URL, multiple images were found, along with text which revealed details about a character by the name of Clancy, and his struggle with Dema.
On May 9, 2018, another letter was added to the page.
On May 30, 2018, a GIF of a cheetah with letters was added.
On June 30, 2018, several more images were added, as well as an audio clip, which when reversed was revealed to by Tyler Joseph saying «We are Banditos». Additionally, the filename for this audio clip was 2018_514_3_8.m4a. When these numbers are assigned letters, they spell out TR_EN_C_H, the name of the album.
On July 1, 2018, more images were added.
On July 5 and July 6, 2018 more images, letters and GIFs were added, this time revealing the color yellow as significant to the era.
On July 8, 2018 a photograph and letter were added. This was the last update before «Jumpsuit» and «Nico and the Niners» were released.
On July 18, 2018 another letter from Clancy was added, this time describing the «Jumpsuit» music video.
On January 22, 2019, the day «Chlorine»‘s music video was released, a letter was added. It describes Clancy’s return to Dema and confusion about where he belongs.
On Friday April 2, 2021 at 3 p.m. Eastern Time, the website changed again. At the top, a line of text reading «//Terminating Files…» appeared, followed by a continually changing file name. The full site was inverted using a line of code, turning the page black and turning all the images dark. A progress bar also appeared.

Personal Life
Tyler Joseph identifies as a practicing Christian and his music often shows influences and themes from his faith. For part of his childhood, he was homeschooled.
On March 28, 2015, Joseph married Jenna Black, having been engaged since July 7, 2014.
On September 7, 2019, Joseph announced Jenna’s pregnancy when he brought her on stage during Lollapalooza in Berlin, Germany saying “I’d like to bring a couple people on stage.”
On February 21, 2020 Joseph and Jenna officially announced their daughter, Rosie Joseph when Jenna posted several pictures and videos to her Instagram account.
Joseph has stated that his first real exposure to music was Christian band DC Talk.
Joseph has a tattoo that represents «something that saved life». Joseph has stated a few times that he is willing to tell people in person, but has no desire for the meaning of the tattoos to be spread across the internet. It is commonly assumed it is related to his faith.
Joseph and fellow band mate Josh Dun have an X tattoo which is symbolic of their dedication to their hometown fans in Columbus, Ohio. The pair were tattooed on stage during a show at the LC Pavilion on April 26, 2013. Joseph’s tattoo is on his right bicep, whilst Dun’s is behind his right ear.
2015
At the start of 2015, Twenty One Pilots made no public appearances as they worked on their next album. This was announced, along with the lead single, in March and in April, the band began performing at concerts and festivals once more. In May-August the band went to Europe, Oceania and Asia, performing material from the new album as well as preparing for the Blurryface World Tour which began on September 8. On August 30, the band appeared on MTV’s VMAs as well as Late Night with Seth Meyers on September 14. The North America leg of the Blurryface World Tour lasted throughout September and October before going to Europe in November. Following the tragic events of the Paris terrorist attack on November 13, Twenty One Pilots canceled the three remaining European shows. The band returned to North America and performed at several Holiday events throughout December and appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on December 16.

Composition
Tyler told Apple Music that the term «choking» comes from a basketball background and its meaning is «standing at the free-throw line and you need to make one of those two, and if you miss them both, you choked.» About the song, he added, «I think for me, with certain friendships and relationships, there were moments that I could have risen to the occasion and I didn’t, and that’s something that I’ll have to live with. I think that everyone has those moments where they feel like they choked. The song is trying to work that through and trying to figure out if that’s someone that I was born to be. Can I shape this? Is this something I can turn around?»

Terminating Files
The black and white Dema map
The website changed on Friday, April 2, 2021 at 3 p.m. Eastern Time.
Replaced _.jpg on Terminating Files Dmaorg, originally yellow.
At the top of the page, a line of text reading «//Terminating Files…» appeared, followed by a continually changing file name. The file name that followed was either the name of an actual image on the page (such as se__elf.jpg), zero to three dots, or text randomly generated by the website with a random ending such as .txt or .zip.
Below this line of text was a progress bar, which appears to have started its progression right as the website changed at 3 p.m. EST. The progress bar restarted from the beginning with every aforementioned file name that appeared above it, but fans quickly noticed that each time the bar reset it would go a little further in small increments. Utilizing the source code of the site, user Tree on the twenty one pilots Discord server was able to determine that a specific equation in the script, p=(e/to)*100, dictated how fast the progress bar was moving and user Jim_NotJosh’sDog calculated when it would reach 100%. In the equation, the value of «to» was equal to 259200 (or the amount of seconds in 72 hours), and the value of «e» increased by 1 every second and changed on every subsequent reload of the page. For example, if «e» was 94391, then the width of the progress bar, «p,» and thus the percentage of completion, would be 36.4% [p=(94391/259200) x 100]. Assuming that «e» began counting from 1 on Friday, April 2 at 3 p.m. EST, it would reach 259200 and complete on Monday, April 5 at 3 .p.m EST.

The full site was inverted using a line of code, turning the page black and inverting all the images. The images that were already inverted on the original version of Dmaorg were replaced with inverted versions of themselves so that, once inverted again by the website, the inversions cancelled out and they looked the same. These images were the map of Dema (_ti_su_p.png, 013 01MOON 08), the black letter (_he_a_vy.jpg, 018 07 MOON 05), and the photo of Tyler in the river from Jumpsuit (2_1_2.gif, 018 07MOON 08). The map of Dema, interestingly, was made completely black and white. The original version was tinted slightly warm; this tint was removed in the Terminating Files black and white version.
Notably, the image with yellow lines (_.jpg from 017 02MOON 12) was inverted, but not to the deep blue that would be seen if the original yellow image were inverted. Instead, an image with red lines was used, causing the inverted image to appear with cyan highlights.

На альбоме Trench депрессия группы достигла максимума — он даже начинается с грохочущей гитарами песни Jumpsuit, в финале которой Джозеф срывается на металкорный скрим. По этой же причине некоторым старым фанатам диск показался слишком тяжелым. Новый альбом не такой — да и на старые пластинки Twenty One Pilots он не похож.
Перед выходом альбома группа снова поигралась с фанатами через сайт dmaorg.info, да и вообще по-всякому тизерила стилистику пластинки и новую цветовую гамму релиза. Release
On March 17, 2015, the band announced the album’s title, track listing and release date. The band’s fans crashed their website attempting to pre-order the album. The band released their new single «Fairly Local» on the same day accompanied by its music video which premiered on official Fueled by Ramen YouTube channel.
On April 6, the band released the second single of the album, «Tear in My Heart», with an official music video released through YouTube. The third single, «Stressed Out», was released on April 28 with a music video. On May 4, 2015, the band posted a YouTube video streaming the audio of the album’s 6th track, «Lane Boy», and released «Ride» seven days later through the same media; both were also singles, being released on the 4th and 12th, respectively. Between the 11th and the 14th the band toured the UK. The music video for «Ride» was released on May 14, directed by Reel Bear Media.
On May 19, 2015, the duo performed at the iHeartRadio Theater LA in Burbank, CA to celebrate the album’s release. The concert was livestreamed on iHeartRadio’s website. The band has shows and festival stops lasting from May 19 to December 14. On July 20, the music video for «Lane Boy» was released. The band is set to play the UK in November. The tour sold out in a matter of minutes.
The album is available on CD, digital download, a black two-vinyl set, a limited edition split-color (Black/Red) two disk vinyl set, and a limited-edition red cassette tape. A Hot Topic exclusive vinyl also exists, which is decorated to look like an ink-blot. As no two disks are exactly the same, these vinyls are extremely rare and are worth hundreds of dollars each. The Hot Topic exclusive Vinyls are not available from any official TOP stores, and are no longer sold by Hot Topic.
Versions
Holding on to You was originally recorded for Regional at Best, but following the band’s signing with Fueled by Ramen and subsequent discontinuation of the album, the song was included on the bonus edition of the album Vessel.

Background and recording
In an interview for Apple Music, Tyler Joseph told about the overall meaning of the song, explaining, «When you strip away what day of the week it is, you lose your rhythm. You lose your sense of what is up and what is down. And that’s a lesson that Josh and I learned pretty quickly on tour, because a Friday night and a Monday night could feel the exact same, whether or not we had a show. When the pandemic happened, everything’s shut down, everyone was starting to learn that same lesson, where the days of the week lose their meaning, and it was messing with people’s reference of time. You feel like you’re swirling and your feet aren’t planted. The song is really, I’m talking to my wife, hoping that she sticks with me, even though I’m working through this, even though I’m kind of tumbling into nothingness.»
The song contains a phone call recording of Tyler’s wife, Jenna Joseph, during its bridge section. About the inclusion of the recording, Tyler revealed in an interview: «I was working on th song and I was sitting in front of the microphone working on some vocals, and it was coming towards the end of the evening and she called me from upstairs just to check in to see what’s my plan tonight. It was just a very organic conversation where she asked, «Are you working on music?» I said yeah. And she says, «That’s cool. I’m tired, I’m going to bed.» And I said, «Well, no, I want to watch Friends with you.» And then she said, «You know, if you’ve got the time and if you’re feeling inspired, you should just go for it.» And I was recording that whole time while on that phone call, and it just happened to fit perfectly as the bridge of the song. And when she says «go for it», I sing a high note and we go into the last chorus and I love it.» Tyler also said that Jenna didn’t like how she sounded on the final product, wanting to re-record it, which Tyler convinced her to keep it as it was.
American record producer Greg Kurstin also co-produced the song. About his involvement, Tyler said: «I thought, honestly, ‘Yeah, I hear this guy’s amazing, but the chances of him adding to this thing in a way that is going to be better than what I think it already is, is probably five per cent. I told him, ‘I don’t want you to waste your time because you’ve got to really figure something out here because I just don’t see how this is gonna work…’ And he went in anyway, and he did it! He threaded the needle and he made the song even better and added a lot of really cool elements to it and produced it out. I’m really excited about the track.»

Trench was critically acclaimed upon release, notably for its production, lyrical content, musical diversity and cohesiveness. Many critics recognized the album as the band’s best work. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album has an average score of 81 out of 100 based on 6 reviews, indicating «universal acclaim».Kerrang! gave the album a positive review saying «some of the year’s catchiest, most accessible alt-pop tunes of the year speaks volumes of the level upon which they’re operating here.»
Billboard gave the album a positive review calling the album «surprisingly cohesive» and that «Trench revels in the confounding genre-blurring and cavernous conceptualism that has defined Twenty One Pilots over their nearly decade-long existence.» Chris Willman, writing for Variety, gave the album three and a half stars, saying «Take my recommendation and forget about the most deeply conceptual parts of this concept album…and enjoy the many parts of Trench that don’t require a thirst for symbolic origin stories.» Damon Taylor of Dead Press complimented the album saying, «a plethora of influences are splashed across the record, giving their core sound a new distinction.»
Christopher Weingarten of Rolling Stone gave the album a positive review calling it «more mature» than Blurryface, saying the album’s elements have «coalesced into a smarter, more mature whole», and that the album «has more of a cohesive sound and feel». Joshua Copperman of PopMatters, in a positive review, wrote «The album hangs together thanks to an increased maturity in the thematic content and production.» In a positive review of the album, GIG Soup wrote, «Twenty One Pilots are discussing topics others are afraid to, and they are doing it right»

Yeung wrote «although Trench requires a few spins to really register, it’s ultimately rewarding and fully immersive, delivering a depth and gravity at which Twenty One Pilots only hinted on Blurryface.» David Hayter of 411 Mania wrote, «mythos laden concept album Trench might struggle to consistently fire on all cylinders, but the good far out weighs the bad, making for a thoughtful and sonically daring experience.»Gary Ryan of NME wrote, «Trench is the sound of a band ratcheting up the ambition without ever being pulled down by an undertow of pretentiousness.
